One Final Effort by MajesticChicken One Final Effort by MajesticChicken
Colored up some Death Company boys going on a run-n-gun charge, while being harried by Night Lords from above.

I was going to post this with my final two submissions, but they are taking longer than expected so I let this one loose.

Original artist is Adrian Smith.

I'm just being honest and I give him a reply.
But can I say this philosophical way, if I cut my hand smeared over canvas with someone else's work, is that considered art? Maybe, that's up to the audience.

But considering how he did it, it's time is not the factor here. Is it.
It's the audience, the audience don't really understand that overlay arts is a easy, anyone could do it, it's tracing in the way, and yes, I test this out on someone who never use photoshop before. Guess what he use a mouse. But none of that now, not once said it's not an art form, I saying it's how can I put it... It's a lazy artform. Still a artform. But remember, you're defending a guy who use other people's black-and-white painted artwork, and all he does is overlay. Oh, did I tell you the definition of insanity?

If you have a problem with this being a Daily Deviation, then the easy fix is to make absolutely sure the staff knew he didn't draw the original. That will then verify that despite that, they recognize this is still an art form.

But if you're trying to argue that this isn't an art form and as you said anyone with half a brain and Photoshop can do it (meaning a very unskilled or untrained person can replicate it) then you're falling short:

I'm going to have to see this tutorial of yours, but I'm in doubt here because your color overlay took 3 hours (I'm guessing a little longer than that). That's hardly the amount of time it takes to press 1 button or set up a single option.

I'm aware of how color overlay in Photoshop can create a single color spectrum over the entirety of the picture or maybe 2-3 colors from different broad angles, but if it's taking you 3 hours to do it then it's a lot more complicated and harder said than done. Time doesn't define art, neither do specific coloring methods. If he's using color overlays, it's a pretty creative way of doing it. To me, it's like saying digital drawing isn't an art because you aren't using a real brush or pencil. You are still required to understand color variances, shading, and base artistic rules and understanding to pull it off. It might seem easy to you because you're good at visual arts, like flying fighter jets is easy for an experienced pilot.

I mentioned photo-manipulation because some people don't think that's an art form, but several Daily Deviations are photo-manipulations; with that there is even "less" artwork going on.

And I hate to say this publicly, (but since you're the attacker here and you currently look like a hater) the definition of sanity doesn't debunk any of my points, nor does it support any of yours. Your attempt at changing the subject to questioning my knowledge about color overlay also points out you don't have a reputable comeback, as well as the fact you don't have any defenses or support for anything you've said thus far. Asking the definition of 'sanity' was a pretty flashy, but unrelated way of trying to cover that up.
(^ In short words, don't start an intelligent debate unarmed, you will lose. Once someone starts citing references it should be a good "heads up" ;) :p)

So if you want to convince me or anyone actually following this who sides with Majestic Chicken, you're going to have to show this tutorial. And if your tutorial can prove just how easy it is, and someone without any artistic talent in the department (or very little) can reproduce it, then you have proven your point and debunked me in full.

Do you know the definition of "Sanity"?
You act like you know a lot of this, when you don't seem to know the basic and broad concepts of how overlay works, if you like I'll do you a solid. I'll do you a tutorial, a 3 part tutorial which in short requires a single button to be used and that is it with hardly anything but a single flat colour. Oh did I mention do you know the definition of "Sanity"?

What Sky-Commander is saying is that adding the "splash of overlays" is in itself a talent and an art form; and quite frankly I agree with him. And no, not everyone with half a brain and Photoshop can do it.

There's actually a term for it: "Colorist"

Noun
1. a person who uses color skillfully.
2. a painter who emphasizes color relationships in a work of art.
3. a person who colors photographs.

[link]

If this were simple line art, and a few very basic colors were added in with a color fill brush, yes anybody that can fill lines or ever owned a coloring book can do that. But this is an extremely complex sketch with several dozen colors and variances of shading. You have to understand shading, technique, lighting, texture, depth, perception, basically everything around art except the concept.

It sounds to me like your oversimplifying the technique. There's nothing in Photoshop that lets you just click one button and suddenly color where you want it appears. In order to do this you have to take a brush and carefully paint and add the color in specific locations to keep it believable without destroying the original artwork.

Remember, even photo-manipulation is an art form. And most comic book artists and films have people that draw the shapes and lines and a separate colorist that adds the color.

okay, yeah no. that's not talent. actual line work is different. B+W is another thing completely.... B+W has the shading already, so yeah your right. i still think that coloring in lineart with no color already there is more skillful than this... XD

Yes, it is in fact a talent, but its wasted when you splash some overlays onto someone else's work, how is that so difficult to grasp?

You honestly thought he did the linework? He posted it in the artist comments, it was made by Adrian Smith, this guy just takes pictures from him and adds a simple colour overlays!

[link] See, this is the original thing (which I got from here [link])

i do, but i still think that coloring is more of a talent than many will admit. i'm not saying it's a godly gift, but still. and honestly i thought they did the linework... XD AND i'm a 3d animator (a shitty one, since i don't have a movie/video that i actually made) and an amatuer DJ.... so yeah..... if you want to see what i mean i have a comic up that i used my animation program to make. XD

anyway, i think we can all agree, that the line work is at least amazing.

You gotta understand, that's me doing it in 5 minutes. If I spent a good hour on it, it'd be fugging amazing. Look, here's something in 10 minutes with a mouse! [link]

But what I'm saying, is that this is a simple job. I don't understand why people have to praise this so much when really, ANYONE can do it.

Clearly you know nothing of graphic designing. I'm a graphic designer, and what MajesticChicken is doing is cheating when it comes to art. All he's doing is grabbing someone else's artwork, putting one layer of colour on it and taking all the glory that comes along with it.

Seriously [link] its that easy, I did that shit in 5 minutes.

i disagree, everyone who uses a tablet is able to actually draw, and as such they have their own style, everyone does. and for those who have to use a mouse (like me) suck at digital since using a mouse is almost impossible.

While this does look more fantastic with colour, I got one little problem with it. . .

I know that the DDs are suggested and chosen by other people but really. . . any artist with access to photoshop and half a brain could replicate this in an hour or two. I don't see why colour overlaid pictures need any special snowflake attention.
